The term "medium speed diesel power plant" refers to a small-capacity(1MW-25MW) power generation facility driven by one or more 4-stroke medium speed diesel engines. Such a plant can be configured for regular or emergency generation, depending on the need, and is usually installed on islands or some other remote area off the national grid.
Doosan Engine built its first medium-speed diesel power plant to serve north Jeju Island(Korea)in 1985. Subsequent projects of this type have been completed in Korea(Samsung Everland theme park, Korea Aerospace Research Institute and Seongnam Passenger Terminal) and the Philippines. We have also installed emergency diesel generator systems powered by medium-speed engines inside the Korean nuclear power complexes at Wolseong, Yeonggwang, and Uljin. They have proven to be outstanding in terms of performance and reliability.

EDG for Nuclear Plants
The emergency diesel generator supplies the power needed to cool and shut down a nuclear reactor safely should it experience control problems or fail. As such the system must meet strict technical requirements, which include reaching the rated voltage and frequency within just 10 seconds.
The EDG system requires a medium-speed diesel engine. The power is needed to shut down the nuclear reactor in an emergency, isolate the containment vessel, cool the reactor core, remove heat from the containment vessel and reactor, and prevent external exposure to highly radioactive material.
